What is an SBIR/STTR?
The Small Business Innovation Research/Small Business Technology Transfer program, better known as the SBIR program, was established to strengthen the role of innovative small businesses by allowing federal agencies to fund research and let businesses or non-profit research institutions develop projects, create new intellectual property, and perform federal research.
STTR funding from the government has no strings attached and allows individuals to get non-dilutive funding for their programs, projects, or businesses to boost technological innovation.
Broken up into Phase I, Phase II, and Phase III, this program allows for gradually increasing funding opportunities over time. Eligibility requirements are based on a variety of criteria, including but not limited to, technical merit, entrepreneurs being American citizens, the for-profit or non-profit status of the business, and the size of the business. More details about eligibility can be found at sbir.gov.
